The word carol means 'to dance to something' and they were often songs sung in Europe at Winter❄ Solstice. Early Christians adapted these carols but they were not very popular as they were sung in Latin🤔 which was not the language of the common people. This changed when St Francis of Assisi started his nativity plays in Italy which were in the language of the common people and included carols that were based on stories from the Bible. The earliest carol was written in the 1400s and soon the tradition of singing carols spread across Europe on Christmas Eve.
